Seaweeds are a part of the diet in many cultures and fucoidan-containing species have been used traditionally for a variety of remedial purposes. Fucoidan contains an abundance of immune-modulating polysaccharides. How Does it work?

Cell walls from marine algae contain an abundance of sulfated polysaccharides. Fucoidan is one class of these polysaccharides found in brown seaweed. Polysaccharides are known to have various effects on immune enhancement and possess other biological activities, such as significant antioxidant activity.* Fucoidan may play in the stem cell-induced repair of cardiovascular damage. In mice studies Fucoidan was found to have anti-metastatic activity. For centuries fucoidan containing seaweed was often compared to “new mother’s milk” in that it helped ‘jump start’ infants, i.e. it gave similar healing abilities as breast milk.
