Psyllium is a natural source of fibre, derived from the seeds of the Plantago ovata plant.
It is most commonly used as a laxative, but can relieve diarrhoea, reduce triglicerides, blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol. Psyllium is also a prebiotic. It works by absorbing water in the gut.
It is important to have sufficient fibre in the diet, especially for those who suffer from gastro-intestinal issues such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
Directions: Mix ONE tablespoonful into a full glass of water and drink immediately. Psyllium may also be sprinkled on cereal or blended into smoothies. (Amounts individuals take may vary.)
Caution: Take at least one hour before, or two to four hours after taking other medications, as psyllium can impair their absorption. Drink plenty of water or other fluid during the day, i.e. 8 glasses full. Be careful not to inhale the powder while mixing, as it can cause an allergic reaction.
